How To Take Your Test

  • Fill to the top as shown for both the tubes.
  • Do not fill only to the lines.
    this will not be enough blood.

step 1:
Locate finger
Open the pack of lancets. Your little or ring fingers are best for collecting the sample.
step 2:
Wash Hands
Washing your hands in warm water helps your blood flow. Ensure hands are thoroughly dry using a clean,dry towel.
step 3:
Use pre-injection wipe
Wipe the selected finger with the pre-injection wipe and let dry.Important: the blood will not form a drop if the finger is wet.
step 4:
Remove lancet cap
Take one lancet from the bag, twist and remove the cap
step 5:
Position lancet against the tip of your finger,push down until you hear a click & hold steady
Position the lancet gently against your finger tip and push down until you hear a click. Hold steady for at least 3 seconds
step 6:
Use gauze swab
Using a gauze swab wipe away the first drop of blood
step 7:
Encourage blood flow
Hold your hand in a downward position and massage the side of your hand down to your finger.
step 8:
drop blood into collection tube
Whilst holding your finger with your other hand, gently milk your hand and finger with downward strokes. Use
the double protective packing walletto hold the tubes vertically.
step 9:
Fill Both the collection tubes
Collect blood up to the top of both tubes. If you are unable to collect enough blood try wiping your finger with a dry tissue, pausing for 5-10 seconds.
step 10:
Securing the blood tubes
Once you have filled the tubes, firmly push on the cap of the tubes until you hear a click confirming the cap is secured. Invert tube to avoid clotting.
step 11:
Invert the collection tubes
Once you have replaced the cap, gently rotate the tube up and down 5 to 10 times.
Complete the fields on the name label
supplied using a ball point pen:
  • Your first name
  • Your surname
  • Your date of birth
  • Date and time of blood collection
Place the label to one side until you have
collected your sample, this will allow you
to see the amount of blood collected as
the label will obscure the sides of the tubes.

Labelling Your blood sample
Affix the label with your details onto the tube as shown, ensuring the label is wrapped around the tubes. Please note unlabelled samples cannot be accepted. Place the tubes in the protective packing wallet supplied.
step 13:
Before you return your sample please ensure :
  • You have completed the Online Test Registration.
    You have inserted all items listed below in the pre-paid postal bag:
  • Labelled blood collection tubes in the protective packing wallet.
  • If you wish to return your lancets please enclose with your samples.

Place your Test Request Form and the tubes in their protective packing
wallet(s) into the self-addressed, pre-paid postal bag. Samples should
be posted on the same day they are taken.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to fast for my test?

If you are having cholesterol tests as part of your profile you may want to fast for 8 hours prior to your test – particularly if you have had a previous high level. It is not essential though, as your results will still give useful health information whether you have fasted or not. Fasting entails not eating or drinking anything except for water.

Do I need to prepare for my test in any way?

If you take blood thinning medication, please tell the phlebotomist before your test. Please drink water and keep hydrated before your appointment.

How do I prepare for the home blood test?

  • Drink plenty of water 30 minutes before the test.
  • Wash your hands with warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Stand up and shake your hands at waist height.
  • Perform 5 star jumps or more.
  • Do not squeeze your finger too hard, gently perform milking motions.
  • Try another finger if necessary.

How much blood do I need to take as a sample?

  • Fill to the top of each tube.
  • There are marked lines on the top of the tube showing how muchblood sample is required.

What forms do I need to complete with the test kit?

  • The Test Request Form (TRF) needs to be completed and sent in the prepaid envelope with your sample.
  • Alternatively, you can scan the QR code on the TRF form and register your test kit.

Where do I send the Pre-Paid Envelope with the blood sample?

  • Post your sample between Monday to Thursday in a priority box.
  • DO NOT post on weekends.
  • Royal Mail has 35,000 specially selected priority post-boxes.
  • Actually, most post boxes are selected priority post-boxes.
  • You can identify these post-boxes by the NHS /Royal Mail sticker affixed to them.
